Concert recap

Kicking off his first solo tour, KARD member BM performed to a full crowd at the Avalon Hollywood, receiving a warm welcome back in his hometown. Despite the show taking place on a Tuesday night, the quaint venue was filled to the brim, and the artist himself was pleasantly surprised as he compared the crowd’s size to those who show up to KARD’s shows. During the two-hour show, BM put on a variety of performances from raunchy and shocking to charismatic, and he even threw in a few surprises throughout the night.

The evening started with two openers: Korean-American singer Uzuhan and Taiwanese-American singer sunkis. Uzuhan was up first with a 15-minute set, which included songs like “Bon Appetit.” His set started with more upbeat pop songs, before quickly transitioning into more rap songs. The short but sweet segment finished up with “Uzutrap,” which showcased video clips taken around LA’s Koreatown on the big screen.

Next up was sunkis, known for his smooth vocals and even smoother dance moves. The young singer performed a 30-minute set, starting off with a quick VCR of him saying he can’t pick up the phone because he’s busy being an opening act on BM’s tour, before “VOICEMAIL” began to play over the speakers. His set continued on with songs such as his latest single “All For You,” “LAST GOODBYE,” and a special song in which sunkis brought a fan onstage for a serenade. The singer also performed “Like I Do,” J.Tajor’s viral song on which he featured. For the performance, sunkis also made sure to show off the viral TikTok dance choreography, which he actually created himself. His set came to an end soon after, and it was time to prepare for the main act to make his appearance.

At just about 8 p.m., the lights dimmed and the music blasting on the speakers came to a halt, and the screen suddenly lit up with BM’s visage, introducing him to the stage. The already rowdy crowd raised their drinks in the air and screamed and cheered to BM making his way out, while casually grooving to his first track, “Lowkey.” Keeping things going at a steady pace with slower songs to start, he performed “Embers” and “Nectar,” two songs off the artist’s recent first EP, Element. The latter of the two songs featured warm pink and orange lights on the big screen as the stage lights turned low, casting a unique silhouette of BM performing his sensual choreography for fans. Taking a short pause from the music, the soloist made a quick introduction and welcomed everyone to his party.

“This is a 21+ show, so everyone let’s get crazy in here tonight,” he began, before reminding everyone to drink safely. Aside from the age limit, the singer also made sure to mention the no-phones policy. “The no phone policy is in place so we can all really see each other and enjoy the moment and experience,” started BM. “But, it’s also in place so my company doesn’t see all the ratchet shit we’re about to do tonight,” he finished with a laugh. After his introduction, the music started once again, only this time, much more upbeat.

This next segment of the show was when things started to get fiery, as he dove into “Bad Intentions,” “Motion,” and “Badgirl Badboy.” The songs featured hip thrusts and body waves galore, even with an instance of BM grabbing and grinding on his microphone stand. Highlighting the first special event of the evening, this section of the show featured a “serenade,” which was more like a lap dance for one special fan. BM lifted his shirt and body waved in her lap, stood behind her to grasp her neck and lean her head back to face him, and thrusted his hips on the floor during the special stage, all set to the tune of “ATAP (After The After Party).”

While the next portion of the show was limited to two songs only, it showcased yet another side of BM. “I know you all know me for saying some outrageous and raunchy things on Twitter and for the Big Tiddie Gang, but I hope you all also know I got a big heart,” the singer started. “If it’s alright with you, I’m gonna show a different side of me just for a few quick songs. This’ll be the only time you see me simping on stage today,” he introduced, before breaking into performances of “LIE” and “Broken Me.” The two songs showed more insight into the usually upbeat singer’s inner thoughts and turmoil, and they were a great break from the high energy tracks previously. Even despite the slower music tempo and lack of sensual choreography, the crowd still thoroughly enjoyed these performances, singing along and waving their arms in the air.

Offering another surprise for the audience, he called up three attendees to hold a twerk dance battle, and the crowd voted for their participant of choice. Participants were able to take some selfies with BM on his phone, and the winner was also gifted a BTG lightstick. Notably, the participants for the previous “serenade” and this dance battle were pre-selected with online competitions by the promoter, and prior to the show’s start, the event staff reiterated this information to the audience. The staff made sure attendees were aware these four individuals would need to leave their GA spots to head to the stage. This small attention to detail made for a smoother experience for attendees, as it eliminated potential dangers from competition over trying to be chosen and potential delays from participants leaving their seats.

The section to come was undeniably the most memorable. Remaining humble and crediting those around him for his success, BM prepared a special segment to pay homage to all those around him that have helped him in his career. “Without the fans’ support, I would just be a nobody writing these crazy lyrics,” he started. “And aside from my own solo music, I’ve also featured in a lot of different tracks with different people, so I wanted to share those with you tonight too!” The section began with KARD’s “ICKY,” an iconic song known for BM’s erotic rap verse. Halfway through performing said verse, BM turned the microphone to the crowd, and they dutifully recited the lyrics back to him. The next song up was “Put it on ya,” by Jessi, BM, and nafla. The song was once again paired with sultry dance moves, and BM ended it with a quick “shout out to Jessi!”

The third song in this section was KOALA’s “RSVP Remix,” which features Jay Park, CHIO CHICANO, and BM. The track was welcomed with high energy as the crowd jumped along with the bass heavy beat. Rounding out this section, the soloist surprised fans with a special appearance by Kim Woosung (of The Rose), one of his longtime best friends, and a collaborator on the song “CWS.” The duo performed their shared song together, running, jumping, and dancing around the stage with bright smiles on their faces. With a big hug at the end of the song, BM gave a quick shout out to The Rose, asking everyone to support his best friend.

The show closed with “Body Movin” and “13IVI,” songs from his 2021 single album, THE FIRST STATEMENT. Not wanting the party to end so early, BM came back onstage for an encore performance and a commemorative photo with the audience. “On the count of three, everyone scream TITTIES!,” he shouted with a laugh, shortly before the crowd followed suit. Creating a unique memory for fans in his hometown, the artist let the crowd choose the final encore song, performing “Motion” once more.

While BM showed off his great physique, spending half the show in a black tank top and the other half shirtless, he also showed off his whole personality. There are times he’s suave, but he’s also laidback and endearingly clumsy, announcing the wrong prize for his dance battle and accidentally ripping his pants onstage. Ultimately, he’s passionate about his music, reflecting on life and love through his songs. All in all, the night was filled with engaging performances and special events that showcased the various sides of BM as an artist.
